American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene

When the fiscal year 2011 President’s Budget proposed eliminating funding for the Vector Borne Disease Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), members of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH) immediately were concerned about the country’s ability to monitor new disease threats and continue surveillance efforts to keep Americans safe from emerging infections. In partnership with ASTMH leadership, the District Policy Group quickly devised, organized, and led a campaign of global health and infectious disease organizations to restore funding for the program in the fiscal year 2011 appropriations process. We were successful in getting language in the accompanying reports to ensure that CDC was able to continue funding this important work.
